Plant Biological Filters - also known as 'veggie filters' use plants to filter the wastes from fish, including excess nutrients deposited into your pond through runoff and dust settling on the water.  These plant filters are a great way to obtain crystal clear water that not only looks great but is cleared of the deadly ammonia that can kill off your goldfish/koi.

Water hyacinth are great plant filters because the roots of the water hyacinth float in the water, they aren't buried in soil.  Most veggie filters work best when they are separated from the main pond containing fish to prevent the fish from eating at the nutrient hungry roots.

How do you make a veggie filter to filter your fish pond? Simple!

1) Veggie filters work best when they are in a separate pond next to your fish pond.  This can be a simple container, but keep in mind, the bigger the container/pond the better.

2)  It's best to put your veggie filter pond higher than the water level of your fish pond.  Using a pump to circulate water from your fish pond up into the veggie pond allows the fish waste to filter through the roots of the veggie filter.  The plants then pull the wastes out of the water.  It is not absolutely necessary to have a separate pond, many people simply throw water hyacinth in the fish pond and the two thrive together.  However the plants are more effective when fish waste is being circulated around them in a separate pond/container.

The result is beautiful plants and clean water water!
